How to Measure AI Search Traffic
AI search is changing how shoppers find and evaluate dealers. Here’s how dealers can start measuring AI search visibility using GA4, Google Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools, and DealerOn’s OnPrompt platform.

How to Measure AI Search Traffic

As AI-powered search becomes a bigger part of the shopper journey, dealers need to understand not just who visits their website, but where their dealership is appearing before the click ever happens.

Some of the biggest questions dealers are asking about AI search:

  • “What are customers searching?”
  • “What tools are they using”
  • “How do we know what traffic is coming from AI Search?”

While AI search reporting is still evolving, there are existing tools available to measure AI-driven visibility and engagement. Platforms like Google Analytics 4 (GA4), Google Search Console, and Bing Webmaster Tools can identify AI-related traffic patterns and conversational search behavior, giving you an important window into how AI-search tools impact traffic. We reviewed some of these on a recent DealerOn webinar, and since then Google has announced several updates, so let’s breakdown the different ways dealers can (and should) start measuring AI performance.

AI Search Measurement Tools

Bing Webmaster Tools is a free resource that can help to provide several key insights to help drive content updates on your website including AI grounding queries, page cited by AI tools, query intent classifications, and AI visibility recommendations. Bing has also announced expansions for Webmaster Tools in 2026. They plan to start including the intent of the searcher, the topics they were interested in, and citation share for any grounding query. It will also include recommendations for AI Search.

Google Search Console can also be used to uncover conversational long-form search prompts using regex filtering to identify AI-style queries. In June of 2026, Google announced the addition of AI Performance metrics into Search Console. It’s important to note that the first release was for a subset of websites in the UK. This decision was most likely made due to country-specific regulations. There has been no mention of the wider rollout at this time.

Google Analytics 4 now gives dealers more visibility into traffic coming from AI-powered platforms like ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, Perplexity, and Claude. With Google’s new “AI Assistant” channel grouping, these visits can be tracked in a dedicated channel, similar to Organic Search or Paid Social. While AI Search may not be driving a high volume of website visitors yet, the shoppers who do arrive through this channel are often highly engaged and converting at a higher rate, making it an important traffic source to monitor as AI-driven search behavior continues to grow.

Monitoring AI Visibility

While platforms like GA4, Google Search Console, and Bing Webmaster Tools provide valuable pieces of the puzzle, you still need a tool that is going to monitor your dealerships’ visibility in the AI Search world. Even if a shopper doesn’t visit your website, you want to know when you were cited in the AI results.

OnPrompt

OnPrompt shows exactly how your dealership appears in AI search and gives you clear, actionable insights.

That’s where DealerOn’s new OnPrompt platform comes in. Currently in beta, OnPrompt is designed specifically to help dealerships measure and improve their visibility across AI-powered search tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, and Perplexity. The platform tracks AI prompts, monitors brand visibility and sentiment, identifies content gaps, surfaces competitor insights, and provides actionable recommendations to improve discoverability. It also helps dealers understand which prompts shoppers are asking, which pages AI tools are citing, and where opportunities exist to strengthen content strategy and visibility across emerging AI search experiences.

The insights gathered from these platforms can directly shape future SEO and content strategies. AI visibility is becoming measurable and dealerships that begin monitoring it now will be better positioned as AI search adoption continues growing.
