How to Make Your Content Even Better

For this week’s Wednesday Workshop video, we continue on the same subject of writing amazing content for your dealership’s website. Last week we shared a tip that helps come up with amazing content, and this week the tip will help you make sure the content is written well.

It’s a simple tip – just read your content out loud! If it sounds odd, then it’s wrong. It’s got to be conversational. Watch the full video for more details…

Welcome back to another Wednesday Workshop from DealerOn. This week, we’re coming at you almost live from the Internet Sales 20 Group conference in Phoenix Arizona… it’s hot here.
Last week’s tip was really popular, so we thought we’d expand on it a bit and share another incredibly helpful content tip.

You’ll want to use this tip on every page of your site, on every blog post, and every time you update the text on any page. First, ask yourself the question from last week’s video – why do you deserve to be #1 – and write out your answer.

Once you’ve got your content written, you’ll want to read it out loud. It sounds simple, and it is – but it’s a HUGE tip that will help your content be even more awesome.

When you’re looking at your site all the time, you’ll develop natural blinders… You know how the site works, and what the content’s about – but you don’t see it like a first-time user sees it.

If your content reads something like “If you’re looking to buy a Toyota in Dallas, come to our Dallas Toyota dealership Jim Bob’s Toyota, where we have the best selection of New Toyotas in Dallas and the surrounding area for anyone shopping for a deal on a Toyota” – then it’s obviously wrong.

Stuffing keywords like this won’t work, but SO many dealers write their content that way. Google’s Panda update targeted poorly written content, and the Hummingbird update helped Google understand semantics… so between the two, your content needs to be natural and conversational.

When you read your content out loud, you’ll catch things that sound weird. If the content doesn’t sound like something you’d say face-to-face to a customer, then it’s wrong.

After you’ve read it yourself, have someone else read it out loud to you as well. You’ll catch everything that sounds unnatural, and once you’ve corrected the strange phrasing, your content will be even more amazing. You’ll win with Google AND with potential customers.

As always, if you’ve got questions or comments, leave ‘em down below and we’ll get back to you as quickly as we can. If you’d prefer to chat in person, we’d be happy to sit down over a beer or two at the next conference. You can catch me and the Hair at the Driving Sales Executive Summit in October, and I’ll be at the Kain Automotive Workshop in Lexington in November. Thanks again for watching, and don’t forget to come back next week for another Wednesday Workshop with DealerOn.
