Welcome back to another Wednesday Workshop from DealerOn. This week, we’re taking it back to the basics and talking about a foundational SEO tactic.

Google’s algorithm is much smarter than it used to be. In the past, you really needed a page on your site for every keyword you were trying to show up for in searches. This resulted in a ton of useless pages. Even with content that was technically unique, you’d end up with tons of pages that basically said the same thing.

It caused site bloat and resulted in lots of pages that human users really didn’t need.

As the algorithm has gotten smarter, SEO tactics have changed. Now, you don’t need a page for every version of every keyword – you simply need a page for each concept or idea that you’re targeting.

If you’re writing conversational content for the page, you’ll naturally use variations of your targeted keyword, and the page will end up ranking for multiple versions of your keyword phrase.

It’s still important to get your foundational tactics knocked out if you want the page to show up well though. You need to include the targeted keyword phrase or a close variation in the title tag, the H1 heading, and the content on the page.

We see dealers all the time with awesome content, but poorly optimized title tags and H1 headings – and their pages don’t have much visibility.

So, whether you’re doing your own SEO or working with a vendor, take a step back and look at the tactics being used on your site. Are you creating needless (and useless) copies of pages with the sole purpose of showing up for variations on a single keyword? Or do you have great content that isn’t showing up well because your basic optimizations aren’t in place?

Getting the basic foundational tactics right can make a huge difference in a page’s visibility in search – so check your site and make sure it’s in good shape!

That’s all the time we’ve got for today. As always, if you’ve got questions or comments, leave ‘em down below and we’ll get back to you shortly. Thanks for watching, and don’t forget to check back next week for another Wednesday Workshop from DealerOn.
