Welcome back to another Wednesday Workshop from DealerOn.

A website’s header sets the tone for the user experience. It’s the first thing a visitor sees, and it dominates the rest of the page design. Optimizing your header means keeping some things at the “top of your mind”. Get it? Top-of-Mind.

Anyway, before we get any further, it’s important that everyone knows exactly what we’re talking about. This is a website header. It’s the bar at the top of a website.

Let’s go over the basics. What needs to be in your header?

These might seem obvious, but your dealership’s name, and logo. If your logo includes your name, you only need one or the other. Navigational elements, and a clear call to action are both necessary as well. Your dealership’s contact information rounds out a good header.

It’s simple, but that’s the whole point. You want a visitor to know exactly what to do the instant they land on your page. Any confusion will make it more difficult for your customers to find what they are looking for.

Let’s talk design specifics.

Studies have shown again and again – brands that place their logos in the upper left hand corner of the page get remembered better than those that place them in another location.

Navigation menus should be simple, keeping the links to an absolute minimum. Too many choices clutter your design. More importantly though, they can cause decision paralysis and guide users away from your calls to action.

A sticky nav bar is one that stays at the top of the page regardless of how far the user scrolls down. This keeps the choices in front of your visitors, and never leaves them hunting for what they want.

When in doubt, use the KISS methodology – Keep It Super Simple. The fewer decisions a user needs to make, the easier it is to guide them toward what they are looking for.

That’s all the time we have for today’s workshop. As always, if you have any questions or comments, leave them below and we’ll get back to you as soon as we can. Thanks for watching. We’ll see you next week for another Wednesday Workshop from DealerOn.
